Drayton Valley has a relatively young, yet fascinating history. As with many areas in western Canada, the local economy began with the fir trade, progressing to lumber and mixed farming. Then, in 1953, oil was discovered and has since become the primary economic base of the community. The Pembina Oilfield is Canada's largest and most prolific oilfield, encompassing more than 900 square miles. The town grew from approximately 75 persons in 1953 to 2,000 in just one year!
